IATO increases membership fee after 7 years; members express displeasure

After a gap of 7 years, the Indian Association of Tour Operators’ (IATO) has raised the membership fee for Active Members from INR 5,000 to INR 9,500 and INR 4,500 to INR 8,500. These fees are exclusive of Service Tax. At IATO’s monthly meeting yesterday at Hotel Crowne Plaza Rohini in New Delhi, the members expressed their displeasure against this unforeseen hike.

IATO Active Member, Rajesh Mudgill, MD, Planet India Travels, said, “The abrupt increase has not gone down well with the members. When the association isn’t facing any cash crunch in its daily operations and paying huge taxes to the government, why can’t it look after its member’s benefits? IATO makes big money through annual conventions as well. In such a case, why is the association taking such an unreasonable decision?” Mudgill was supported by other IATO members present at the meeting.

Giving clarification and pacifying the members, Pronab Sarkar, President, IATO, outlined that the increase has been undertaken after a gap of seven long years and comes with value additions. “The lunch meeting will now be complimentary pan India even for regional chapters and better facilities will be ensured for the members with the added amount onboard. Moreover, we have a strong team at the IATO Secretariat which needs annual increments for motivation,” he said.

Rajiv Mehra, Vice President, IATO, added that the bank interest rates have gone down with time and today expenses are at par with the available funds. The association will be holding its closed door Executive Committee Meeting next week and will decide on the same then, he stated.

Sarkar however agreed that they will take up this issue with the IATO Executive Committee and requested the members to email in their feedback.
