With 16 years of experience in the travel and tourism industry, Dev Karvat has established a strong reputation for focusing on providing innovative global assistance and travel insurance services. In the past ten years, he has worked extensively with mid-sized and top-notch travel agencies across India to offer customised products that suit customer requirements, resulting in significantly higher revenues.
Initially offering only travel insurance, TrawellTag has grown over the years under Karvat’s leadership to offer a wide variety of travel ancillary services. In 2012, the company joined hands with the world’s leading dedicated providers of travel insurance and medical assistance, Cover-More, rebranding itself as TrawellTag Cover-More. It now has a distribution network of 450 employees operating in 57 branches across India, and more than 5,000 representatives across seven countries. With its fully integrated and in-house claims assistance service, it offers travel protection to more than 2.2 million people globally and one international traveller is medically evacuated by Cover-More every day.

A commerce graduate from Mumbai University, Karvat started his career in insurance in 1999, when the industry was experiencing a market boom. “Coming from a family background of insurance providers, it was the last thing that I wanted to pursue but my passion for travel made me come up with the idea of starting a travel assistance services company which was a very nascent concept back then,” he recalls.
With innovation as a USP of his business, Karvat has introduced many one-of-its kind travel assistance and insurance products in India. “I believe in continuously adding value to the products we offer,” he says. During the initial years, Karvat strived to establish a niche space for TrawellTag - luggage tracking service in the travel insurance market. Soon it was time to give an edge to the products on offer and in 2010, along with online luggage tracking and travel insurance, the company started providing its clients 24X7 emergency medical assistance services. “We analysed the needs of consumers and have continuously evolved our product to cover even the tiniest essential a traveller could think of, during his journey,” says Karvat. In 2011 and 2012, TrawellTag’s assistance service was extended to include Global Concierge Assistance and Family Protection, respectively. In 2013, the company partnered with Cover-More to expand its network globally. Karvat shares, “The tie-up was a landmark moment in my life. It was when I could see my dream of becoming a global leader in providing travel ancillary services materialise.” Day Break
Speaking about his daily routine, Karvat states, “When I am not travelling, I wake up at 6.30 am, which is followed by a 45-minute walk. I am very particular about leading a healthy lifestyle, so exercise is a must in my schedule.”
For breakfast he prefers the traditional Indian cuisine which includes upma or poha, though his preferred choice would be a South Indian breakfast. “I report to work at around 9.30 am and the first thing on my list is to check my e-mails and catch up with the team. I then get on with my agenda for the day,” he says.
Lunch time is around 1 pm, and the meal consists of home-cooked rotis, dal, vegetable, and salad. “I prefer home-cooked meals whenever possible as I am travelling for most part of the week. I am a strict vegetarian and am conscious of my diet. I eat a small meal every two hours, which keeps me active through the day. Since I have a sweet tooth, I make sure that I have something sweet in the day, at times even compromising on a meal for it,” Karvat states.
He hits the gym three times a week and returns home by 8 pm. Dinner includes smaller portions of a variety of one-dish meals. Bedtime is by 10.30 pm, Karvat informs, adding, “Although I am an avid reader, I have been cheating on it since a long time. I like to interact and play with my sons between dinner and bedtime. Since my younger son Veer is just two years old, it is a very exciting experience to come back home and see the day-to-day changes in him and all that he has newly learnt. It is a very refreshing end to a long and tiring day.”Family Man
Karvat lives in Mumbai with his wife Bhavi and sons, Hrimaan (7.5 years) and Veer (2 years). He talks animatedly about his sons, “My children are my biggest stress-busters. When I am in town, my day begins and ends with spending some time with them.”
Weekends are dedicated to quality time with family. “In my younger days I was passionate about cricket and am glad that it has passed on to my elder son who is equally fond of the game. On weekends, he insists that we play a game of cricket with his friends, or that we accompany him on his matches. My other passion is photography and am glad I do not have to look beyond my home to pursue this passion,” Karvat says.
He adds, “When there is a family get-together, we have a good time listening to classic Bollywood melodies or my father singing them. He is a professional singer and I enjoy listening to him sing. I ensure that we spend such times more often together, which helps me balance my personal life and work well. I am glad I can handle it all smoothly, thanks to my family, especially my wife Bhavi, who is my pillar of strength and my team at work.”
