Royal Brunei Airlines (RB) has launched its new direct flight route between Bandar Seri Begawan and Chennai, India, with the inaugural flight landing in Chennai on November 5, 2024, greeted by a ceremonial water cannon salute. This route expansion strengthens RB’s network and marks a pivotal connection between Brunei and India, fostering deeper cultural and economic ties. To celebrate, RB held events in collaboration with the Brunei High Commission, Brunei Economic and Development Board (BEDB), and Brunei Tourism, including a press conference, investment seminar, and a “Brunei Night” showcasing Brunei’s rich heritage.
The events at ITC Grand Chola in Chennai aimed to highlight Brunei as a unique travel destination and a promising investment landscape for Indian businesses. BEDB hosted a seminar emphasising Brunei’s strategic appeal for investors, focusing on its stable political climate, infrastructure, and access to ASEAN markets. During “Brunei Night,” traditional Bruneian performances celebrated 40 years of diplomatic relations, with dignitaries from both Brunei and India reinforcing mutual goals for development and cultural exchange.
RB’s CEO, Captain Sabirin Hj Abdul Hamid, described the new route as a bridge for tourism, trade, and cultural connection between the two nations. The Airbus A320neo will operate on this route three times weekly, offering a seamless and eco-friendly travel experience. A codeshare with Air India expands connectivity to key destinations in RB’s network, further facilitating travel and business exchanges.
This launch aligns with India’s vision for an ASEAN-India Tourism Year in 2025 and Brunei’s Wawasan 2035 economic goals, enhancing Brunei’s tourism appeal and providing Indian travelers with new access to the serene beauty and heritage of Brunei.
