Six heritage sites in Madhya Pradesh have been listed on the tentative UNESCO list, bringing pride to the state. Madhya Pradesh CM Mohan Yadav conveyed his congratulations to the people of the state through social media. The newly included sites in the tentative list comprise Gwalior Fort, the Historical Group of Dhamnar, Bhojeshwar Mahadev Temple, Rock Art Sites of Chambal Valley, Khooni Bhandara in Burhanpur, and5 God Memorial of Ramnagar in Mandla, as announced by the chief minister on a specific platform.
Municipal Corporation Commissioner Sandeep Srivastava highlighted the extensive efforts made since 2010 to include the underground water structure Khooni Bhandara in the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage list. In 2013, a team from UNESCO assessed the structure, and all recommendations were duly addressed. Presently, the district administration, municipal corporation, and Madhya Pradesh government have devised a comprehensive action plan to enhance facilities for both domestic and international tourists and researchers visiting the site in the near future.
Burhanpur’s BJP MLA Archana Chitnis lauded the inclusion of Burhanpur’s historical Khuni Bhandar in the UNESCO World Heritage list as a significant achievement. She recounted the journey of efforts that began in 2006 and culminated in the UNESCO team’s inspection in 2013. Addressing the accessibility concerns raised during her visit, special funds were allocated for the construction of an approach road and a railway overbridge, which are nearing completion. With these infrastructure developments, Chitnis expressed optimism for Khooni Bhandara’s permanent listing and outlined plans to further enhance facilities for prospective domestic and international tourists and researchers.
