Municipal Corporation Commissioner Sandeep Srivastava highlighted the extensive efforts made since 2010 to include the underground water structure Khooni Bhandara in the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage list. In 2013, a team from UNESCO assessed the structure, and all recommendations were duly addressed. Presently, the district administration, municipal corporation, and Madhya Pradesh government have devised a comprehensive action plan to enhance facilities for both domestic and international tourists and researchers visiting the site in the near future.
Burhanpur’s BJP MLA Archana Chitnis lauded the inclusion of Burhanpur’s historical Khuni Bhandar in the UNESCO World Heritage list as a significant achievement. She recounted the journey of efforts that began in 2006 and culminated in the UNESCO team’s inspection in 2013. Addressing the accessibility concerns raised during her visit, special funds were allocated for the construction of an approach road and a railway overbridge, which are nearing completion.
